Before you call anyone, do one thing: walk to your thermostat and check whether the fan is set to ON instead of AUTO. That single setting is the reason a furnace blower keeps running in most GTA homes, and flipping it back to AUTO is a ten-second fix that costs nothing. If your furnace blower keeps running and the warm air never seems to stop, you probably do not need a furnace repair technician yet. You need to rule out the easy stuff first.
This is a different problem from a furnace that turns on and off too often. Short cycling means the whole system keeps restarting. A furnace fan that will not stop means the blower stays energized even when there is no call for heat. Check the thermostat fan setting first
Almost every thermostat has two fan modes. AUTO runs the blower only while the furnace is actively heating, then shuts it off a minute or two after the burners stop. ON runs the blower continuously, all day and night, whether the furnace is heating or not. If someone bumped that switch to ON, the fan never stops, and nothing is actually broken.
- Find the fan control. It is a separate switch or menu item from the heat and cool setting, usually labeled Fan with ON and AUTO options.
- Set it to AUTO. On a dial thermostat, it is a physical toggle. On a smart or digital thermostat it is a menu or a Fan button.
- Wait for the current cycle to end. The blower keeps running for a short purge after the burners shut off. Give it two or three minutes before you decide it failed.
If the fan stops once the setpoint is reached, you are done. This was never a furnace fault. If the blower keeps running with the fan on AUTO and no heat is being called for, then something in the furnace is holding it on, and that is worth a closer look or a call to a thermostat repair visit.

Why your furnace blower keeps running
Once the thermostat fan is confirmed on AUTO and the blower still will not stop, the cause is inside the furnace. Four things account for nearly every case, and they range from a simple part to a control board fault:
- A stuck fan limit switch. This safety control tells the blower when to start and stop based on plenum temperature. If it sticks closed, it keeps the blower energized even after the furnace cools down.
- A fan relay or control board stuck closed. The relay that powers the blower can weld shut, or the circuit board that commands it can fail, leaving the fan running with no signal to stop.
- Thermostat wiring problems. A jumped or shorted G (fan) wire, a loose terminal, or a miswired thermostat can send a constant fan-on command even when the display says AUTO.
- A failing thermostat. Dead batteries or a faulty board can leave the fan output stuck on. Fresh batteries and a reseat sometimes clear it.
It helps to know what you are not dealing with. How to troubleshoot when a furnace blower keeps running
Work through these in order. The first three are safe homeowner checks. Steps four and five involve internal components and belong to a licensed technician; they are listed so you understand what a pro will do, not as a DIY task.
- Set the thermostat fan to AUTO and wait. Give the system a full cycle. The blower should stop a couple of minutes after the burners shut off.
- Confirm there is no active call for heat. Lower the temperature setpoint below the current room temperature. If the blower stops, it was simply following a heat call.
- Check the thermostat batteries and wiring. Replace weak batteries and gently reseat the wires at the thermostat terminals. A loose G wire can hold the fan on.
- Inspect for a stuck fan limit switch. A technician tests the limit control that starts and stops the blower and replaces it if it is stuck closed.
- Test the fan relay and control board. A technician checks whether the blower relay has welded shut or the board is commanding the fan incorrectly.
- Call a TSSA-licensed technician if it keeps running. If the fan will not stop after the homeowner checks, the internal controls need professional diagnosis
When to call a licensed technician
Gas furnaces are regulated equipment in Ontario. Internal work on the limit switch, the fan relay, the control board, or any gas component must be done by a technician licensed by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority, the provincial body that oversees fuel safety. Is it bad to run the furnace blower continuously?
Running the blower on ON by choice is not dangerous. Some people run it for even air distribution or better filtration. The downsides are a higher electricity bill, faster wear on the blower motor, and air that can feel cool because the fan moves unheated air between cycles. If you like constant circulation, a variable-speed furnace does it far more efficiently than an older single-speed motor stuck on high.
A blower that runs continuously because a part failed is a different story. A stuck limit switch or welded relay means the furnace is not controlling itself normally, and that can shorten the life of the motor and hint at a heat problem.
