Central air conditioners cool your whole home through your existing ductwork. The outdoor condenser pumps refrigerant to an indoor evaporator coil sitting on top of your furnace, which absorbs heat from the air and dumps it outside. The number to compare is SEER2, the 2023 efficiency rating: 14.3 SEER2 is the Canadian minimum, 16 to 18 SEER2 is mid-range, and 20+ SEER2 is premium variable-capacity territory.
Sizing is critical: too big and the unit short-cycles and never dehumidifies; too small and it runs nonstop on hot July days. A typical Toronto home needs 1.5 to 4 tons (18,000 to 48,000 BTU).
