Water Heater

Your water heater is the appliance you ignore until the day it fails and floods the basement. Two main types: tank-style (40 to 75 gallon storage, lower upfront cost, ready hot water but standby losses) and tankless (heats on demand, endless hot water, smaller footprint, higher upfront cost but lower operating cost). Tankless makes the most sense for households of 1 to 4 people or homes with limited mechanical room space.
For tankless, the spec to compare is GPM (gallons per minute) at a 70 F rise: 6 to 8 GPM handles two showers running simultaneously in a Canadian winter, 9+ GPM covers larger homes. Energy Factor (EF) and Uniform Energy Factor (UEF) measure overall efficiency: 0.90+ is condensing tankless territory.
